FADER PREMIERE

Sam Ray has a thing for repurposing pop music. There's a memorable Drake sample on the Maryland shape-shifter's most recent LP as Ricky Eat Acid, his on-again-off-again emo band Teen Suicide recently added a cover of Sky Ferreira's undeniable "I Blame Myself" to their live set, and he recorded a lo-fi rendition of Frank Ocean's "Thinking About You" for a Top 40 tribute compilation. NYC songwriter Niia doesn't have as many Twitter followers as Sky or Drake, but there's a radio-ready grandeur to her minimal pop creations, and Sam Ray seems at home re-imagining her song, "Generation Blue," through his Ricky Eat Acid filter. In what seems to be his attempt at making a "banger" or something, he plays around with restraint and release, occasionally pausing for a split-second of radio silence before unloading a current of digital ecstasy.
