Jazz Cartier Channels Downtown Toronto For Marauding In Paradise Mixtape

“I’m from Downtown Toronto, and Drake’s from Uptown, so that’s a totally different mindset.”

Toronto artists—OVO and otherwise—are benefiting from Drake's shine, but the Boy is far from being the only rapper worth listening to who is putting on for the Six. Another is Jazz Cartier, who has been slow and steady building momentum towards his first full-length, Marauding In Paradise, which drops today. Marauding In Paradise is Cartier's rendering of Downtown Toronto sprawled across 16-tracks, all produced by his old friend and longtime producer Lantz.

During a recent visit to New York, he broke down Toronto's scene politics. "I'm from Downtown Toronto, and Drake's from Uptown, so that's a totally different mindset," he said. "As the only one giving it an identity, Marauding In Paradise is a story of built up emotions, and frustrations, through the eyes of the city's biggest target. All the intricacies throughout this project foreshadow life and death, and I'm content with that. High risk only calls for higher reward."

Stream the project, including the previously released Toro Y Moi and Like, Crazy-sampling "Rose Quartz/Like, Crazy" as well as big new bangers like "Dead Or Alive," below.
