Dev Hynes Criticizes Narrow Focus Of BET Awards

And Azealia Banks calls the “Best Female Hip-Hop Artist” category a “running joke.”

The BET Awards nominations were announced this morning: Nicki Minaj and Chris Brown each received six nominations, while Lil Wayne and Beyonce pulled down four apiece. (Amusingly, Jodeci got nominated in the “Best Group” category, where they are competing with a number of groups half their age, including Migos, Rae Sremmurd, and Rich Gang.)

But the nominations were not entirely without incident. Dev Hynes, the singer/multi-instrumentalist behind Blood Orange—and a producer for Solange, Sky Ferreira, and others—suggested on Twitter that the BET awards should change their name to reflect their narrow focus: “Mainstream Rap/RnB/Pop with black people.”

Hynes wasn't the only one to (gently) mock the nominations on social media. Azealia Banks, who was nominated in the “Best Female Hip Hop Artist” category—along with Minaj, Tink, Dej Loaf, Trina, and Iggy Azalea— called the BET awards “bogus.”
