No Wyld’s “Odyssey” Video Is A Monochromatic Cliffhanger

Restrained visuals meet huge sound from former architecture students.

May 29, 2015

No Wyld are a Brooklyn-via-Auckland trio who describe their music as the “sonic alchemy” of hip-hop, alternative rock, and electronic elements. Also known as Mo Kheir, Brandon Black, and Joe Pascoe, No Wyld met and began making music while studying architecture, music, and film in New Zealand. Their video for “Odyssey”, which premieres today on The FADER, is a slow-burning, cinematic short that pairs swift sounds with slowed-down visuals to great effect.

The maximalist touches on “Odyssey”—an effortlessly forward-moving drum line, rich orchestral arrangements, sweeping chants, and Mo Kheir’s nimble flow—meet minimal monochromatic subtlety in the video, filmed in a single take one night in Brooklyn. “‘Odyssey’ is about the journey one takes to reach each destination or goal, pushing to be heard and not looking back,” No Wyld told The FADER via email. Through this contrast between My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy-inspired production (the album version of “Odyssey” features work by Andrew Dawson, who won a Grammy for his mix engineering on Kanye West’s MBDTF) and simple camerawork, the constant motion of No Wyld’s artistic journey is for a moment suspended in time for our viewing pleasure.

Watch the video below and look out for No Wyld’s debut album this fall, via Columbia Records. In the mean time, you can listen to "Odyssey" on their latest EP, Abstract.
