Flo Morrissey Premieres “If You Can’t Love This All Goes Away”

Morrissey turns in a lovely piano ballad.

June 09, 2015

Musicians often try to trick themselves into rediscovering their youthful innocence—the sense of discovery and limitless possibility that starts to change and warp almost as soon they start writing songs. Flo Morrissey sidestepped this problem by returning to an instrument after a long hiatus. "If You Can't Love This All Goes Away" "was my first song I wrote when I started to play piano again," the singer tells FADER. "I used to play when I was little but stopped for some reason—until I was 17 and fell back in love with the keys. I think the lack of 'knowledge' I had with this learning helped me keep a vulnerability and fragility and know that the music would lead the way." When Philippe Zdar—who has famously mixed albums by Phoenix, Cat Power, and others—heard the track, he felt compelled to produce it.

"If You Can't Love This All Goes Away" will appear on Morrissey’s debut full-length, Tomorrow Will Be Beautiful, out July 17 via Glassnote. Read FADER’s feature on Philippe Zdar here.
