Tyler, The Creator Responds To A Former Fan’s Critique Of His New Album

“Ohhh, it was cool when I was raping girls and telling you how sad I was on records, but when shit changes and I’m feeling great...you cant deal with it?”

June 18, 2015

Tyler, the Creator recently shared his nostalgia for the early days of Odd Future, but that doesn't mean he wants to go back in time. When one fan wrote a note on Reddit about how he misses the old Tyler and he's "done" with his new music, the MC penned a lengthy response, reflecting on how he and his music have changed—or grown, depending on your perspective—over the years.

"Why cant I share my joy with the world?," he wondered. "Ohhh, it was cool when I was raping girls and telling you how sad I was on records, but when shit changes and I'm feeling great and I fuck with myself you can't deal with it? Cause you can't relate?...After a while you realize you don't want to be around people who [aren't] positive, who [aren't] focused, who don't want more. Why would you want to be around someone is is a downer?... All I'm doing is spreading good vibes and tryna give some confidence to people and at least telling them they can accomplish something."

Tyler also called out the fan for saying he liked the rapper most when Tyler was "feeling depressed because he was stuck in a house arguing with his grandma," bringing up an excellent point in his takedown: "Dude, that was in 2011," he writes. "It's 2015, if he really thinks that 4 years later I would still be living on my dead grandmothers floor, and still be sad with all these amazing things happening around me, then he is stuck in 2011. And I don't mean that in a bad way, when you have a favorite artist, you tend to grasp onto an era, trust me I do that with artist that I love but I also know they grow and see new things and change and mature and all of that...Shit, that would be sooo sad if I was making the same album over and over again."

You can read the rest of Tyler's letter here, where he also addresses rumors that Odd Future is no longer on friendly terms and responds to suspicions that he's been "sneak-dissing" Earl Sweatshirt and Kendrick Lamar.
