When Kanye West was first announced as the Saturday night headliner for this year’s Glastonbury festival, there was controversy. In scenes reminiscent of the grotesque backlash when Jay Z became the first major hip-hop star to headline the Pyramid Stage back in 2008, a Change.org petition was launched to get Kanye’s slot cancelled in favor of a rock band, and reached over 130,000 signatures. Glastonbury organizer Emily Eavis even claimed that she received death threats in the wake of the announcement.
But, here at the festival today, that negativity is nowhere to be seen. It’s easy to hop on a bandwagon and to generate outrage online—the person who launched that vitriolic Change.org petition admitted that he has never even been to Glastonbury—but IRL, the air is buzzing as thousands of Kanye fans await the chance to see their fave rule the UK’s most famous festival stage. Yesterday, The FADER spoke to a handful of these fans to find out what they’d say to Kanye today, ahead of his "Bound 2"-be-legendary set on Saturday night. Glastonbury loves you, Kanye!
