Angela Hunte Has A New Word For Ass On “Bunda”

The songwriter turned soca star drops a frenetic, horn-driven dancefloor jam.

There are six million ways to say "ass"—choose one. On the brand-new "Bunda," premiering today on The FADER, songwriter-turned-soca-star Angela Hunte makes a solid case for adopting the afro-Brazilian slang for bubble butt. "I fell in love with this word from the moment I heard it. It means ass, but I was recently informed by a cab driver from Brazil that the word 'bunda' originated by African slaves that brought it from Africa. He said it means a woman with round behind, a 'fatty' then Brazilians adopted it and began using it as a slang word for 'ass'," she generously explained over email.

The song's frenetic energy is in line with "Party Done," the Machel Montano carnival anthem that made Hunte a household name in Trinidad and beyond. This, time, though, she takes the fête global, with a high-octane, horn-filled beat produced by frequent collaborators DJ Buddha, Kassiano, and Jerry "Wonda" Duplessis. It's the type of chune that'll sound as good in Port-Of-Spain as it will in Toronto or Rio. But, lest you thought it was just about asses: "For me, "Bunda" is all about a woman who isn't afraid of her curves, she is proud, confident, a total boss of herself, and she knows it," Hunte says.
