London Artist The Japanese House Sounds Blissfully Free On “Clean”

Watch the video for the 19-year-old singer and producer’s uplifting new single.

September 07, 2015

The Japanese House is the alias of electronic-leaning singer-songwriter Amber Bain, a 19-year-old based in London. Her debut EP, Pools to Bathe In, was produced by Bain herself alongside The 1975 members George Daniel and Matthew Healy. Just a few months after its release, the same team have reunited to create her second EP, Clean; the title track was just premiered by Zane Lowe on his Beats 1 show, and you can watch the light-saturated accompanying video above.

"'Clean' is an apology to a friend," Bain told The FADER over email. "It's about the clean light a good person can shed on you once they forgive you, ridding you of your guilt and making you feel like a good person too." Filmed during her travels around Europe this summer, the video mirrors the track's uplifting narrative: while Bain sings in rich, layered vocals about the power of an understanding soft gaze from a loved one, the sun cuts through clouds and skateboards rush along sidewalks with the same sense of freedom and release. No matter what I do, I know you got me, girl.

Watch the video above, and if you're U.K.-based, find out where you can catch The Japanese House live this October below. Dirty Hit Records will release the Clean EP on November 6.
