Sturgill Simpson Shares “In Bloom” Video

A Sail’r's Guide to Earth arrives April 15.

Sturgill Simpson likes covers: his last album, Metamodern Sounds In Country Music, included a pair of songs written and recorded by other people. The one that got the most attention was "The Promise," because it was originally recorded by the '80s band When In Rome.

This time around, he upped the ante by cutting his own rendition of Nirvana's "In Bloom." When he announced the April release date for his A Sailor's Guide to Earth album, he also described his memories of Nirvana in a press release. "In seventh or eighth grade, when that album dropped, it was like a bomb went off in my bedroom. For me, that song has always summed up what it means to be a teenager, and I think it tells a young boy that he can be sensitive and compassionate—he doesn't have to be tough or cold to be a man. So I wanted to make a very beautiful and pure homage to Kurt."
