“We need to stop treating Puerto Rico like it’s just a tax haven or a place to have terrifying sex with a stranger in a coconut mask,” John Oliver declared last night. “Instead, we have to start treating it like an island of American citizens whose fate is interwoven with ours.”
Puerto Rico is currently facing a debt crisis; according to The New York Times, it does not enough money to cover its obligations in May and June.
Oliver brought Lin-Manuel Miranda onto his show last night to make a case for legislation to aid Puerto Rico. A commonwealth with not a lot of wealth, a not-quite nation, $70 billion topic of conversation, Miranda rapped (starting around 19:10). Hoping to God John Oliver’s comical dissertation resonates with the Congress that got us in this situation. This is an island, 100 miles across, he added later. A hurricane is coming and we’re running up a loss.
Miranda also wrote an op-ed about the situation last month for The New York Times. Read that here.
