FADER Mix: Cooly G

A summer-ready mix from the U.K funky pioneer.

May 04, 2016

Cooly G is one of the original key figures of London's underground giant Hyperdub, and one of the pioneers of the sultry, playful genre of U.K. funky. But as a producer and vocalist with a relentless hunger for new sounds, she's shown she can turn her hand to just about anything. Her latest album Wait 'Til Night explored raw, open-hearted R&B, while a litany of heated dubplates like 2014's "OI Dirty" have delved into murkier corners of the dancefloor. Ahead of a headline appearance at The Yard in east London this month, the artist has put together a FADER Mix that will have you skanking headlong into summer. Check it out below, and read on for more on what she's been up to lately (just three upcoming EPs and an album, no big deal).

Where are you right now? Describe your surroundings.

COOLY G: I'm in my room, just finished tidying up, picking out new Balenciaga to wear tomorrow for my birthday. My laptop's on my lap, Eastenders is on, kids are in their room. I'm looking at my DJ travel bag to pack for Wednesday going to Berlin for a gig. My room is just pure white with crazy different style lighting and music equipment and trainers all on [the] wall, with a collection of hats and my vinyl.

Tell us a bit about this mix. What do you imagine people doing while listening to it?

The mix is just a quick banger mix...I played a few of my own produced tracks on there. I imagine people skanking hard wherever they are, even if they're on the bus with headphones on, and saying, "Yes a Cooly G mix thank youuuu."

What are you working on at the moment?

I'm working on three EPs, two for Hyperdub and one for Rinse. Also an album for Hyperdub. I'm getting my set/outfit ready to DJ at The Yard for Wild Combination, May 20 [in] Hackney. Get your tickets on Resident Advisor. Thinking about new music gear too. Also starting a club night—more info on Twitter soon.

What's the last book you read that had a big impact on you, and why?

The only books I'm reading is my kids' books with them, and the big impact is when my kids think that it's real and it's like an adventure. We act out some of the scenes, dress up like heroes, and I had to be hulk the other day.

And finally, what's your favorite dish to cook, and how do you make it?

Curry and roti. It takes a lot of effort to make the roti so fluffy, hmm my mouth is watering as I write this. But I'll be here all day telling you how I make it, my nan taught me, but maybe I'll do a live stream one day [to] show you guys.
