The Brit pop star tears into “Sheena Is A Punk Rocker.”

May 07, 2016

In the four years or so since Charli XCX came onto the popular music scene, she's proved to be a chameleonic performer capable of delivering across every genre from bubblegum pop to hip hop lite.

Last night, the 23-year-old Brit found herself entering yet another realm of musical possibility, taking on Ramone's grimy "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker" at VICE Media's New York City afterparty for their Digital Content NewFront event. Joined on stage by members of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and TV On The Radio, XCX tore into the 1977 hit with her usual infectious energy.

In fact, the whole evening was dedicated to covers, with Win Butler of Arcade Fire fame and Kurt Vile covering David Bowie's "Rebel Rebel," "Perfect Day" by Lou Reed, and Ramones' "I Wanna Be Sedated" while the illustrious frontwomen for Dum Dum Girls, Best Coast, and Perfect Pussy dove into a cover of Sex Pistol's "Anarchy In The U.K." Meanwhile, rapper-turned-record exec Pusha T pulled from his own catalog and performed "Numbers On The Boards" from 2013's My Name Is My Name.
