Drake Played A Gogo Flip Of “One Dance” At His Show In Washington D.C.
Fans did not appreciate his attempt to pay tribute to the capital’s musical tradition.
Those who live in the DMV (that's the D.C. Maryland Virginia area, not the Department of Motor Vehicles) are familiar with Gogo music — a regional style of funk popularized by Chuck Brown in the '70s. During his second Summer Sixteen show in Washington D.C., Drake tried to pay tribute to the local culture by shouting out D.C. Gogo outfit Backyard Band and performing to a Gogo flip of "One Dance." Watch a snippet of the performance below.
However, audience members were not happy with Drake's attempt to incorporate D.C. culture into his set, calling it "cultural appropriation" and fearing that he would try and claim the D.C. sound for himself.
