In a recent interview with The FADER, ONYX Collective's saxophonist, founder, and de facto leader Isaiah Barr described his roving jazz band as "more of a collective force of energy than just a music group." That characterization makes sense; Barr and his five bandmates — drummer Austin Williamson, singer Julian Soto, bassist Dean Torrey, guitarist Jack Gulielmetti, and keyboardi player Josh Benitez — have become known for their indelible presence in downtown N.Y.C. as much as they have for their music. It's been a couple of years since ONYX's founding, but the band is finally releasing its debut album, 2nd Avenue Rundown. The project is out today via Know Wave and Supreme — a non-traditional release for a nontraditional group. Timed with the arrival of 2nd Avenue Rundown, ONYX has made a teaser video whose two minutes are as textured, shutter-fast, and freeform as the music they make.
