Hurray For The Riff Raff’s Video For “Hungry Ghost” Is A Glowing Ode To DIY Spaces

“As artists and freethinkers we must care for each other and hold these safe spaces close to us.”

January 17, 2017

In, 2007 Hurray For The Riff Raff's Alynda Segarra was singing simple folk songs, hopping freight trains, and performing with the likes of Bonnie "Prince" Billie, Sharon Van Etten, and Dark Dark Dark. This March 10 on ATO Records, Segarra will release her new record, The Navigator, which tells the semi-autobiographical story of a kid named Navita who's finding herself while navigating gentrification. In both concept and production, it's a far cry from her most recent album, 2014's old-timey Small Town Heroes. "Hungry Ghost" is flush with sweeping guitar lines that are both ominous and invigorating; "I've been a lonely girl/ But I'm ready for the world," sings Segarra. It's more than a rock song — it's an anthem. The video, premiering today, was directed by Sarrah Danziger and filmed in New Orleans, where Segarra has musical roots. It’s an ode to the Ghost Ship tragedy and of safe DIY spaces, which we need now more than ever.

"'Hungry Ghost' captures the beauty of safe and queer DIY venues and parties," Segarra told The FADER via email. "These sanctuaries will only become more important in these grave and uncertain times. Queerness is the future of our country and we, the future generation, are aiming for the freedom of gender fluidity and intersectional justice for all people. As artists and freethinkers we must care for each other and hold these safe spaces close to us. With those we lost in Oakland and Orlando in our hearts, this video is a love letter to all the queer people who are putting on intentional events that promote nights of safety, unity and freedom. Keep up the good work."
