London’s Hackney Council Denies The Home Of NTS Radio Is Under Threat

Councillor Guy Nicholson tells The FADER that an offer for the Gillett Square car park has been rejected.

On Monday, July 3, it was reported that London's Hackney Council was considering the sale of the Gillett Square to private developers. The area is home to a number of independent businesses, including NTS Radio. The area also houses jazz club The Vortex and is regularly used by local skaters, all of whom would likely be forced to move on by new owners.

A petition designed to appeal to convince Hackney's Mayor Philip Glanville to list Gillett Square as an Asset of Community Value was duly set up and attracted over 3,000 signatures in 24 hours.

Approached for comment by The FADER, however, the council clarified that while they did receive an offer for the car park, it was rejected and there are no plans to sell Gillett Square in the immediate future.

Councillor Guy Nicholson, Cabinet Member for Planning said. “A developer approached us and offered to buy the Gillett Square car park site, but we are not going to sell it.”

NTS supported the petition on Twitter, but a spokesperson was unavailable for comment when contacted by The FADER.
