Girls Trip Is The First Black-Led Movie To Cross $100M At The Box Office

The film’s director, producers, writers, and stars are all black.

Girls Trip became one of Hollywood's most gratifying success stories this year when the bawdy comedy surpassed industry projections for a $31 million opening weekend. The film's critical success and strong word-of-mouth recommendations have helped it continue to rake in cash since opening on July 21, and last weekend, the film's producer Will Packer announced that the film had crossed $100 million at the box office. "I am SOOOOOO Proud of these four Brown Girls who did what they said couldn't be done!!!!" he wrote in the Instagram caption.

The haul is historic, too: Girls Trip is the first film produced, directed, written by and starring African Americans to make $100 million in ticket sales, as BlackFilm points out.

Girls Trip is the highest grossing live-action comedy of 2017 so far. It stars Jada Pinkett Smith, Regina Hall, Queen Latifah and Tiffany Haddish.
