If you’re still not over your ex, this Swedish DIY pop song might make you feel very seen

Watch Malmö artist ShitKid’s bittersweet video for “Yooouuu.”

January 10, 2018

In the opening shot of her new video, ShitKid puts a true-to-life twist on a pop star trope. She gazes into a bright spotlight, and wind blows her hair as if she’s readying herself for a diva-ish performance. Then, she sniffs, looks to the side, and wipes her nose. The Stockholm-based artist’s new song “Yooouuu” is as catchy as anything in your New Music Friday playlist, but feels intimately personal too, pairing a lo-fi bass groove with her deadpan, confident vocals. She sings lyrics that decisively call time on a relationship, but also obsess over how many days — marked out by “so many cigarettes” and “so many cups of coffee” — will pass before a run-in with an ex.

Speaking via email, ShitKid (a.k.a. Åsa Söderqvist) explained more about the video for “Yooouuu”: “It was recorded in one day in Malmö by my art director/tour manager, Moa Romanova, who recently became friends with Elias, the cute guy who also stars in the video. We had decided we wanted a cheesy love story for the video, and filmed it at the cold beach, at Elias’s home, and walking the streets of Malmö whilst getting wasted. Some parts are shot at the ‘after-party.’ We had fun.”
