Mary J. Blige got two Oscar nominations for Mudbound

Mary J. Blige has picked up her first Academy Award nominations, including a nod for Supporting Actress, for her role in Mudbound.

Blige stars as Florence Jackson in director Dee Rees's movie about two men soldiers, one black one white, who return to rural Mississippi after fighting in World War II. The movie debuted on Netflix in November 2017. She stars in the film alongside Garrett Hedlund, Carey Mulligan, Jason Mitchell, Rob Morgan, and Jason Clarke.

In another first for the movie, director of photography Rachel Morrison has become the first woman nominated by the Academy for best cinematography in its 90 year history.

As well as being nominated for Supporting Actress, Blige is also up for Best Original Song. "Mighty River" appears on the soundtrack to Mudbound and can be heard below.
