Onyx Collective’s “Fruit Stand” video is a beautifully bright-eyed journey to Japan

The jazz force’s latest clip finds magic in the little things.

Last fall, downtown New York City jazz fixture Onyx Collective shared “Fruit Stand,” a gently inquisitive, free-flowing number led by almost-wafting, sweet sax and grounded by steady bass. It was the lead single from the first of their two Lower East Suite projects. Premiering today on The FADER is the video for “Fruit Stand,” an equally curious and beautifully bright-eyed clip.

The video, shot in Japan, captures candid moments like kids playing, elders going about their days, and train conductors working. They're everyday events that seem special and nuanced when isolated. With each face and place captured receiving just a few moments on-screen, one is moved to wonder: What do the rest of their days look like?

"On a warm summer day in Chinatown, I ran into Zalmai Levat, who just returned from his trip to Japan," shared founder and saxophonist Isaiah Barr. "He showed me the footage he took, and told me about his experience of living on a monastery for 3 weeks. I immediately thought, These are perfect visuals for 'Fruit Stand!' That’s how this video came together. The goal is to continue to support and add to the creative community and collaborate with as many artists that are around us." Watch the clip above.
