Last Wednesday in the glowing lobby of the Brooklyn Museum, a well-heeled crowd gathered to welcome the debut of “David Bowie is.” The exhibit celebrates Bowie’s legacy as a restless innovator of sound, style and identity. With over 400 items from Bowie’s personal archive, the show spans multiple mediums—candid portraits, handwritten notes, vintage performance clips and—most notably—show-stopping costumes. Since its debut in 2012 at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, “David Bowie is” has toured 11 museums over five continents. Last Wednesday, art critics, super models, and Bowie fans alike turned up to celebrate the exhibition’s final stop in Brooklyn.
Echoing Bowie’s penchant for epic style, attendees of the VIP preview paid homage through looks that ranged from jewel-toned dandies to Union Jack-clad rockers fits. A handful of partygoers showed their devotion by way of unabashed hero worship with Ziggy Stardust tattoos, graphic tees and printed separates. For those on the low-key end of the style spectrum, high-waisted trousers and well-tailored pop of colors were in order. Yet still, the truly daring—we’re looking at you Coco Rocha—stepped in full-on costume get ups.
