This freak folk song might make your day a little lovelier

Listen to “Angel of Night” from Dark Tea’s self-titled new album.

Dark Tea is the solo project of New York musician Gary Canino. His self-titled, self-released new project — which was partly mixed by Jarvis Taveniere of Woods and mastered by Mikey Young of Total Control — comes out at the tail end of May.

"Angel of Night," a dusky song from the record's front half, is debuting here today. Canino's soft voice sounds lovely on it, and the production is rich and wide-open. It's not lo-fi, but it's not too polished either; it reminds me of haunted folk faves by Marissa Nadler and Conor Oberst, among other things.

"'Angel of Night' is one of the oldest songs of mine that I recorded for the album," Canino said in an email. "There are a lot of songs about staying up all night — "Early Blue" by F.J. McMahon being one of the best — but not a lot of songs about what it's like to finally sleep after staying up that long, now that the sun is up. I tried to channel that unique feeling."
