Vic Mensa address XXXTentacion “controversy” on new song “Empathy”

Mensa condemned the rapper during a freestyle at the 2018 BET Awards, but his past lyrics about choking a girlfriend came under scrutiny.

After attracting the ire of XXXTentacion fans, Vic Mensa has shared a new song called "Empathy." As he writes on Twitter, it's "in response to all the controversy." Listen to it above. The new song comes in the wake of Mensa's freestyle at the BET Awards, which contained lyrics many fans considered directed at the late rapper: “Only time you bear arms is in a wife beater, loser/Your favorite rapper's a domestic abuser.”

Soon, as Pitchfork points out, lyrics from Vic Mensa's song "There's A Lot Going On" were highlighted on social media – on the song, Vic Mensa raps about choking an ex-girlfriend. Mensa raps about the song's re-emergence, and accusations of hypocrisy, on "Empathy."
