“When I didn’t have money to pay for studio time, when I couldn’t pay for a video, it was them putting me in the studio. There’s mad women that live the same life as I do. I’m just fortunate that my girls, they been here for the years.” Those are the humble words of the indomitable Bronx MC Maliibu Miitch, speaking straight from the heart in the latest episode of FREQUENCIES, a new documentary series from FADER and WAV spotlighting the most important emerging talent from around the globe.

This episode is a family affair. Whether swapping real talk in the beauty shop with her friends or chopping up vegetables for dinner with her nephews, the doc reveals that Maliibu Miitch’s connection to rap is deeply rooted in her bond with her neighborhood and her loved ones. It’s a remarkably intimate look at the human behind Maliibu Miitch’s gritty on-the-mic persona, but it’s also one that reveals why she’s not going anywhere anytime soon: “I got so many doors closed in my face, it took me so long for people to accept me as a writer. I just kept sticking with it. I have nephews...and I want them to have a better life. That’s the thing that’s fueling me with this music.”
