New York-based indie songwriter Yohuna takes cutting people out of her life quite literally in her new video, "Dead To Me," premiering today on The FADER. It's the third single from her forthcoming record Mirroring, expected June 7 via indie label Orchid Tapes. Over streaky-sounding guitar, Yohuna frankly declares someone "dead to me, too." If there's a little bit of joy to be detected in her voice, it's surely from the peace-granting effects of Marie Kondo-ing your friend list.
In the Mark Lukenbill-directed video, the song's meaning gets twisted into a cute camp horror-movie with fellow magical songwriter Emily Yacina playing the villain. She poisons Yohuna in the first few seconds of the video, and then steals her songs and skyrockets to fame, but not before performing at Yohuna's funeral, first. Lukenbill used an early 80s Panasonic tube camera to shoot the video, so it's drenched in that eerie glowy-neon and static fuzz of old-timey horrors. "We all agreed the video couldn't be a bummer," Lukenbill writes to The FADER in an email. "It had to be cathartic, a little bit sneeringly over it. The idea of thieving a creative identity was itself lifted from Morvern Callar and Em plays a great Samantha Morton."

Yohuna writes of the the song: "[It's] about cutting someone you've loved out of your life, but telling this campy murder story with Emily made it so playful...Strength to the people pleasers and codependents cutting people that feed off that energy out of your lives. That's hard. File them away into the 'Dead to Me' folder of your heart and go easy on yourself!"
