Bill de Blasio is the ska lover

The longshot presidential candidate tooted his own horn in a cringey CNN interview.

May 21, 2019

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio is running for president, a move that has prompted antipathy from everyone. A member of his inner circle reportedly called the move "fucking insane," and 76% of New Yorkers — his constituents — don't want him in the race. On top of this, he faces the challange of distinguishing himself in the crowded Democratic field of nearly two dozen candidates where the political spectrum is already well represented — you have everything from a democratic socialist to a guy who helped write a bill that put a lot of black people in jail.

De Blasio needs to separate himself from the pack, and unfortunately for his campaign, he's struggling in the personality primary as well. During an interview on CNN Tuesday, de Blasio was asked about his favorite music. What followed was extremely uncomfortable for everyone. Watch below at 9:00.

Let's break it down how terrible this is, moment by moment:

1) De Blasio's "Ahhhh" when co-host Alisyn Camerota announces the segment title "Candidate Mixtape;"
2) The way he discusses "The Clash" and London Calling like he'd just googled them before the show;
3) The way he says "ska," which just cannot be taken seriously coming from a person who looks like Bill de Blasio;
4) Alisyn Camerota's equally mystifying claims that Di Blasio has a "punk aesthetic," then saying "there's a whole hidden ska happening inside of [her]."

If the punk thing didn't work out for Beto O'Rourke, it's probably not going to help you, Bill. Maybe lean into being loathed by the press?
