Disney's live-action remake of the classic film The Lion King is already a hit at the North American box office, where it grossed $78.5 million on its opening day. The film is projected to pull in $180 - $200 million by the end of the weekend, putting it on course to become the second-biggest opening weekend of 2019.

The film, boasting a star-studded cast of everyone from Beyoncé to Childish Gambino, saw strong international numbers as well; grossing $192 million from 52 markets including $81 million from China alone.

In addition to the film’s official soundtrack, Friday saw the release of Beyoncé's new album The Lion King: The Gift , featuring new music and executive production from the star as well as music from Burna Boy, Kendrick Lamar, Jay-Z, Childish Gambino, Tiwa Savage, Mr Eazi, Wizkid, Tierra Whack, Major Lazer, 070 Shake, and daughter Blue Ivy Carter.
