Ava DuVernay will produce an adaptation of Octavia E. Butler’s Dawn

Victoria Mahoney, a second unit director on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, has been attached to direct the Amazon TV series.

Ava DuVernay and her production company Array have signed on to produce a television adaptation of Octavia E. butler's science fiction novel Dawn for Amazon, Variety reports.

Published in 1987, Dawn follows an African-American woman who collaborates with aliens to revive the human race after a devastating nuclear war.

The show's pilot will be directed by Victoria Mahoney, who worked as a second unit director on the new Star Wars film The Rise of Skywalker; she will also write the series. Mahoney has directed episodes of Power, American Crime, Grey's Anatomy, and more. Her debut feature film Yelling At The Sky was released in 2011.

DuVernay's Central Park Five series for Netflix When They See Us was nominated for 11 Golden Globes, winning Outstanding Lead Actor for Jharrel Jerome's portrayal of Korey Wise. She is currently working on a Nipsey Hussle documentary for Netflix.
