Lost Girl joins the U.K. garage revival with her “I Won’t Give Up” video

It’s a #TBT moment from the London-based vocalist.

U.K. garage, a turn of the century genre typified by London clubs filled with people in designer clothes drinking champagne and dancing to loved-up dance music with a BPM higher than their bar tab, has had something of a comeback in recent months. Rapper AJ Tracey enjoyed his biggest hit to date with the throwback beat of "Ladbroke Grove" while Craig David, once a veteran, is back playing arenas in his native U.K. The sound always belonged to female vocalists, really, though which makes Lost Girl's arrival with "I Won't Give Up" even sweeter.

Over a hiccuping beat 20-year-old Londoner Lost Girl sings about the chase of romance and her refusal to give up on her man without a fight. Her vocal delivery, yearning as she tries to make a connection, ensures the song feels contemporary and not too lost in nostalgia. A video for the song, premiering above, places Lost Girl exactly where she should be when "I Won't Give Up" plays: in the middle of the rave.

Speaking about the video via email, Lost Girl told The FADER she looked to her mom for influence: "I wanted to take it back to the garage days as it’s what I grew up listening to in the car as a toddler. It was super special and important to me to capture the essence of my mum's rave days and put a 2020 spin on it, so the outfits were inspired by my mums old fits."
