Rick James, the oft-sampled icon of funk music and the subject of a certain Dave Chappelle sketch, is getting the documentary film treatment. Bitchin’: The Sound And Fury Of Rick James will premiere on Showtime on September 3, and yesterday the project's first trailer dropped. Judging from the clip, streaming above via Stereogum, the film will make an effort to balance James' undeniable place in pop history with his brutal treatment of women — he spent five years in prison in the early '90s for kidnapping and sexual assault, and faced several allegations over the course of his life before passing away in 2004 at age 56. Bitchin' is directed by Sacha Jenkins, who helmed the docuseries Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men and Burn Motherfucker, Burn!, a documentary about the L.A. riots.
