Mitski shares new single “Working for the Knife,” announces 2022 tour

It’s her first new single since 2018’s Be The Cowboy.

October 05, 2021

Mitski set the world of indie rock on fire with her 2018 album Be The Cowboy, one of the year's most acclaimed LPs. Today, she returns with "Working for the Knife," her first new solo single since then. The song is a welcome return for Mitski's brand of ennui, compact and literary like a good short story, all wrapped up in an anthemic, shoegaze-y folk sound. Unmistakeably Mitski, but still something new.

Zia Anger directs Mitski in the music video, streaming above, where she performs a modern dance routine across an empty auditorium. Think Fatboy Slim's "Weapon of Choice," but with more emotional depth. “It’s about going from being a kid with a dream, to a grown up with a job, and feeling that somewhere along the way you got left behind," Mitski said of the song in a press statement. "It’s being confronted with a world that doesn’t seem to recognize your humanity, and seeing no way out of it.”

The release of "Working for the Knife" comes with the announcement of a 2022 tour. See those dates below.
