Pistol stars Anson Boon as the Pistols' rancourous frontman Johnny Rotten and Louis Partridge as doomed bassist Sid Vicious. Thomas Brodie-Sangster plays the band's scheming manager Malcolm McLaren (who, in real life, would go on to help shape hip-hop history) and Toby Wallace plays Steve Jones, the band's guitarist (Jones wrote "Lonely Boy: Tales From a Sex Pistol:, the 2017 memoir Pistol is based on).

Last year, John Lydon a.k.a. Johnny Rotten took the band to court in a failed attempt to block the series from using Sex Pistols' music. A lawyer for the singer said he took exception with the “hostile and unflattering” depiction, saying he comes across as “the annoying little brat with the great bone structure who’s always asking for more.”
