Boston singer-songwriter Anjimile Chithambo has announced his sophomore album, The King. The project will follow his 2020 debut, Giver Taker, and is scheduled to arrive September 8 via 4AD. The forthcoming record is produced by Shawn Everett and features contributions Justine Bowe, Brad Allen Williams, Sam Gendel, and James Krivchenia. “If Giver Taker was an album of prayers, The King is an album of curses,” Chithambo says in a brief, ominous press statement.

The King’s lead single and title track is out today. “What don’t kill you almost killed you,” Chithambo sings midway through the song, over a vicious synth and choral backing vocals that rise from gentle cooing to a messianic fever pitch. “What don’t fill you pains you, drains you.” The track comes with a mesmerizing visualizer courtesy of Daniela Yohannes.
