North Carolina country singer Luke Combs’ cover of Tracy Chapman’s 1998 classic “Fast Car” has done the unthinkable, passing the original track’s number six peak on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. After reaching number eight on the chart last week, Combs’ rendition has now moved to number four, eclipsing its source material and joining Morgan Wallen’s number one track “Last Night” in the top five — the first time two country songs have sat there side by side since 2000.

Wallen, whose record deal was suspended “indefinitely” in 2021 following footage that emerged of the Tennessee artist using the n-word, has bounced back considerably since then. His March album One Thing at a Time currently sits at second on the Billboard 200 list after eight weeks at No. 1, and “Last Night” has topped the Hot 100 chart for 10 weeks straight.
