Mitski has shared two new singles from her forthcoming album, The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We. Together, “Star” and “Heaven” form a pair of celestial twins, each expanding from relatively modest beginnings to filigreed, Wall-of-Sound peaks. “Star,” for example, takes a fairly stock metaphor — “Love is like a star” — and guides it to its tragic yet inevitable conclusion over an enveloping organ drone.

“Heaven,” meanwhile, kicks off as a swooning country ballad in the vein of Angel Olsen‘s Big Time before being subsumed by a lush orchestral breakdown, trilling flutes and all. In tandem with these singles, Mitski has announced the “Amateur Mistake” tour, a brief run of intimate, acoustic performances across the U.K. and the rest of Europe this October. Find those dates and listen to “Star” and “Heaven” below.
