bbymutha has signed to True Panther Sounds — the buzzy, independent New York label that’s currently home to Grace Ives, Frost Children, Model/Actriz, Oklou, and Popstar Benny (among others) and boasts King Krule, Abra, Cloud Nothings, Hunx and his Punx, Shlohmo, Ty Segall, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and more as alumni. The signing comes after a decade of self-releases from the Chattanooga MC born Brittnee Moore, who’s built a cult following through the years with her raw delivery, impeccable beat selection, and defiance of industrial and societal norms.
To celebrate the deal, Moore has shared her debut single as a True Panther artist. “gun kontrol” is a tightly wound, two-minute track with a nervous J Rick instrumental that creates the illusion of constantly speeding up, and the even more anxiety-provoking frame of a pitched-down voice urging listeners to build an AR-15 from modular parts ordered separately. Despite this fraught backdrop, bbymutha sounds as confident as ever, dropping the phrase “I do whatever I want” so many times in the song’s short span it becomes a mantra.
