The xx have entered the studio for the first time in six years to work on their fourth album, the group’s guitarist and co-lead vocalist Romy Madley Croft told NME during an interview at last weekend’s Beyond The Valley music festival in Victoria, Australia.

“It’s quite different being back in the studio with The xx,” Croft says in a video clip from the interview posted to NME’s Instagram page. “I think Oliver and Jamie and I have all tried new things and learned a lot from the different projects, and that’s quite healthy to be like, ‘What have you learned? What should we do now?’ And I think it’s quite wide open, and it feels exciting to be starting again, in a way. But yeah, we’ve started making some music and I’m really excited about it.

“It’s still pretty early,” Croft continues. “I think you’ll still be able to tell it’s us, but I think we’re excited to move on and keep it feeling fresh.”

The xx’s latest studio album, I See You, arrived in 2017. Since then, Romy Croft and Oliver Sim have each dropped a debut solo project — last year’s Mid Air and 2022’s Hideous Bastard, respectively — while Jamie xx has shared only three new original songs since the release of his beloved 2015 sophomore LP, In Colour.
