Anne Hathaway is channeling Charli on a new song, literally.
"Burial," the first track released from the forthcoming A24 psychosexual horror flick, Mother Mary, was released today. It's sung by Anne Hathaway who stars in the film as pop star named Mother Mary who reunites with her estranged best friend and former costume designer, Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel).
The track — co-written by Hathaway, Jack Antonoff, Charli xcx, and Charli's husband, The 1975's George Daniel — is a piece of high drama synth pop reminiscent of Mayhem-era Lady Gaga, and in little melodic pockets, its co-writer, Charli xcx. Its soaring chorus harkens back to Gregorian chants or ethereal church music, which fits well with the name of Anne Hathaway's biblical pop star.
In a teaser for the film that features the song, one can see the church motifs in Anne Hathaway's costuming, where she wears a heavenly gold crown and an angelic flowing dress.
The forthcoming film's soundtack will include several original songs, including one by FKA Twigs, who also acts in the film. The film also features performances by Hunter Schafer, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, and other rising stars.
In December, The FADER compiled a list of our favorite movies featuring fictional pop stars including A Star Is Born, Vox Lux, and more.
Mother Mary will hit hits theaters on April 17. Watch the official trailer for Mother Mary and stream "Burial" below.
