North West has a budding career as a rapper and producer, though her music has less in common with her dad than the contemporary SoundCloud scene. Ahead of her debut EP north4ever this Friday, she’s featured on a new single from Edward Skeletrix, whose new album Body of Work is also out this Friday. The video for “Let’s Have Some Fun” is an IYKYK spread of emerging artists, from A24-signee Sophia Stel and digital artist Sotce to GEN F stars Feng, Baby Osama, and Jackzebra. Watch the video above, and see a list of the cameos below.
Skeletrix has also announced the features on Body of Work will include North West, Slime Dollaz, fashion designer MOWALOLA, French artist Pol Taburet, and a post-humous song with XXXTENTACION!, who Skeletrix produced for in the 2010s under the alias cight. It seems like most of the album will be produced by frequent collaborator o0o and Skeletrix himself, as well as Fern Shy, Alan Mark, Juuni, and dipper, among others. Over the past year, North has popped up at festival sets by Molly Santana, Che, Bktherula, and more, but teaming up with Skeletrix still feels surprising. The Florida-born rapper-slash-concept-artist has a preference for eerie, off-kilter instrumentals, far off from the rage and digicore artists North usually posts — but “Let’s Have Some Fun” splits the difference for a happy medium. I’d describe the Am3 instrumental as “ambient gabber,” though it could also be accurately labeled “the soundtrack to throwing up in a club bathroom at 3 in the morning.”
In typical Skeletrix fashion, his “chorus” here is deliberately low-effort, really just a mantra: “Life could go by quick / so let’s have some fun.” But that works in tandem with the pulsing instrumental to ramp up to North’s casual verse, where she says she has no competition, sells out shows, and doesn’t go to bed until the sun is up. As far as rockstar lifestyles go, her nocturnal studio sessions seem downright wholesome.
Earlier this year, North West partnered up with gamma., the same company handling the release of BULLY by Ye, to release her debut single “PIERCINGS ON MY HAND.” That self-produced song had more of a rage palette in line with her previous collaborations with Lil Novi (aka Lil Wayne’s son). North also produced “blink twice” from skaiwater’s February album wonderful.
