When it comes to contemporary pop and hip-hop, you’d be hard-pressed to name an individual more influential than Chad Hugo. The Virginia Beach native has had a hand in massive hits for everyone from Clipse to Beyonce. Now he’s putting out his own music, tagging Tierra Whack and Leikeli47 for verses on his debut solo single “Jumpupw!nya.”
Co-produced alongside West Londoner Cadenza, the beat for “Jumpupw!nya” mutates from brassy horn stabs to spacey synth harmonies and back again, all while frenetic drums maintain dizzying momentum. Whack and Leikeli47 are more than game to keep up the pace, throwing off quickfire bars about hitting licks, getting bread, and going completely “bananas.”

The new single arrives as Hugo is in the midst of suing his former creative partner Pharrell Williams. Back in January, Hugo claimed that Williams owed him up to $1 million in royalties, tour income, and merchandising related to the 2017 N.E.R.D. album No One Ever Really Dies. That 2026 lawsuit follows a 2024 dispute over trademark rights related to The Neptunes and N.E.R.D.
The status of both lawsuits is unknown, though Williams said in 2024 that he and Hugo were not on speaking terms at the time. In response to each lawsuit, representatives for Williams characterized the lawsuits as premature or unnecessary, essentially saying that any accounting discrepancies would be resolved in good faith.
