Gorillaz House of Kong in NYC: Everything to know

A new immersive experience exploring the music and lore-filled universe of Gorillaz has arrived to New York City.

Gorillaz House of Kong opened its doors at the cavernous Agger Fish Building in Brooklyn on September 1. The multimedia experience is being touted as a new way to be "taken behind the curtain of Gorillaz’ extraordinary world, on an exclusive journey through the band’s misadventures, musical innovation and groundbreaking virtual existence." The limited-run and one-time-only exhibition will be open every day until September 28, when it conclude the morning before Gorillaz's headlining performance at Madison Square Garden on September 29.

Developed by SWEAR, the studio of the artist Stephen Thomas Gallagher who's been creative directing all of Gorillaz live shows since 2018, the exhibit has already hosted limited-run engagements in London and Los Angeles. The Gorillaz House of Kong experience is a comprehensive dive into the many elements that make up the world of Gorillaz. Created in 1998 by Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett, the virtual band is made up of four animated characters: 2-D (vocalist), Murdoc Niccals (bass player), Noodle (guitarist), and Russel Hobbs (drummer).

Per a press release, the House of Kong experience "chronicles the ascent of these four outsiders – bassist Murdoc Niccals, singer 2D, drummer Russel Hobbs and guitarist Noodle – from their first coming together to blow up a pre-digital world with the release of 'Tomorrow Comes Today' up to the inception of this year’s critically acclaimed global chart-topping ninth album, The Mountain."

The exhibition itself features exclusive, never-before-seen sketches from Hewlett's creation of the band, music video storyboards, a massive 3-D model of the Plastic Beach island depicted on the eponymous album, and a variety of other artifacts. Exclusive, special-edition merch items are also on sale at the gift shop.

No, however a general familiarity with the band's biggest songs does make the experience more enriching. The FADER staff visited the exhibition during an early press run on opening day. The one-hour walkthrough opens with a comprehensive summary of the band's creation and a thorough introduction to each of the virtual band members, which is enough context for any Gorillaz novice to enjoy the rest of the exhibition, regardless of initial knowledge.

Tickets are timed and start at $61 including taxes and fees. Reservations must be made in advance to secure a spot.
