Yu Su and Moopie’s b2b set at Making Time ∞ (pronounced “Making Time Forever”) was as floaty as the mist surrounding their stage.

Yu Su — a Kaifeng-born, London-based selector — has become a central node in global dance music, bringing her textured and free-flowing sounds to stages at Horst Festival in Belgium, Berghain, and Making Time ∞, where she’s played four times. Moopie, who’s based in Melbourne and who also runs the label A Colorful Storm, has also made waves globally for his moody and tempo-variant mixes, which he has taken to festivals like Sustain-Release and Dekmantel, as well as clubs like Tresor.

The two came together for a b2b set that reflected the musical dreaminess of the festival writ large. Making Time ∞ , which took place September 18-20 at Fort Mifflin — a historic Revolutionary War bunker that sits directly next to the Philadelphia International Airport —, can feel like a hallucination in and of itself. On the same small festival grounds, one can experience heady techno at a forest-set stage, shoegaze by the waterfront, and a full set of ambient music within the bunker itself. Yu Su and Moopie channeled that eclectic spirit during their set, performing a psychedelic and enlivening nearly two hour-long mix during their Saturday afternoon time slot. Nothing was pre-planned but the first and last tracks, the duo tells The FADER. Instead, they let inspiration and intuition guide them down a path which ranged from Minimal Techno and Tribal to Ambient Techno and Industrial.

The FADER: Have you guys been to Making Time ∞ before this year?
Moopie: No, I haven't.

Yu Su: This is my fourth time performing.

To people who've never been, what do you think makes this festival special?
Yu Su: It’s a very diverse lineup. I like how it doesn't have this headliner energy, which I think is very rare for American festivals. And of course, the site is so special. It's very beautiful.

What's your philosophy with playing b2bs?
Yu Su: We only really talk about a general vibe before. I was asking him [Moopie] what we should play first and last, because I think with this kind of set, the first and last songs are important to think about.

Moopie: Working out the first track of the set may be the hardest task, and it sometimes comes down to just frantically looking through your record bag or USB 10 minutes before the set.

So you haven’t pre-set any genre for the mix?
Yu Su: We're both people who play everything.

Moppie: Maybe not everything, but more than others.

Yu Su: I guess no Liquid Drum and Bass yet.

How have the scenes that you're rooted in locally shaped your DJing practice?
Moopie: Playing in a city [Melbourne] that I grew up in for over 10 years, I have a deeper connection with the crowds, and I have an idea of their attention spans, patience levels, and what I can get away with. It's not a city where you have really long DJ sets as opposed to Berlin so with that in mind, you play with different energy levels.

Yu Su: None of the cities I've lived in have felt like home in that sense. I wouldn't say London feels like my local scene ... it's more like this stage of my life. I'm there and the music there influenced me. I’ve been in London for two years and before there Vancouver. Vancouver was important because Vancouver introduced me to dance music.

Do you remember where you first met?
Moopie: It was in Mexico City this year [at a Making Time party]. I’d known Yu Su’s work for many years beforehand.

Yu Su: I’d been a fan of his label [A colorful Storm] as well.

Moopie: You never told me that.

Yu Su: Why would I? I'm Chinese. I'm not gonna tell it to your face [laughs]. Also when we met, I was so surprised that he can speak Chinese as well. I don't think I have any other DJ friends in our circle who I can talk shit in Chinese with when no one else can understand us.

Moopie: This is true. I’ve never spoken Chinese in a DJ booth before, so that was quite funny.

We’re here in Philadelphia, a quintessential American city at an American festival. Do you have any impressions of how American shows or festivals are different from those abroad?
Yu Su: Making Time is different from most American festivals. This feels more European, because of its setup, the music, and the intention of it. Also because of the economic situation in America, it's just impossible to do festivals like this because it's different from European places where you get government support. Like in Belgium, they have so much government support so they can do experimental festivals like Horst Festival. They don't have to do all this commercial stuff; in the rest of America, you have to really have that balance to just keep going.
