Today, October 23, Yung Miami (real name Caresha Brownlee) released her debut solo album, Watch Dis!. The 21-track project features a song titled “Dear JT,” a nod to Miami’s former partner in City Girls, JT, real name Jatavia Johnson. The two former friends and group members had a public falling out in 2024. “Dear JT” is the first time either of the two has spoken up about the other since then.
The song, which boasts a melancholic beat and emotional background vocals courtesy of Tiffany Evans, is packed with bars in which Miami bittersweetly plays back her memories through the years alongside JT, ranging from getting into fights to shopping in Barcelona. “Reminiscing in my feelings bout 2018, it was a scene”, she raps in this song. Tiffany Evan’s chorus and outro reinforce this message as she repeatedly harmonizes the line, “Ooh, I'm missin' you.”
Miami and JT formed City Girls in 2017, though they’d been friends long before. In late 2017, their song “Fu*k Dat Ni**a” blew up. 2018 became their breakout year: after signing a record deal with Quality Control, they dropped both their debut mixtape and debut album. Additionally, Yung Miami made a cameo in Drake’s “In My Feelings” music video, which helped boost the group’s popularity. The duo kept dropping music and achieved consistent commercial success, releasing three studio albums and earning numerous awards and nominations.
However, following their 2023 Album, RAW, underlying tensions regarding sneak disses in songs and solo career aspirations boiled over as the pair got into a back-and-forth argument on social media in early 2024 before splitting later that year. The two have been estranged since.
In an interview with HOT 97 that dropped on the album’s release day, Miami opened up about her thought process behind the song’s creation, saying she cried while making it and that she wanted to address what was on her heart. Miami noted that she didn't get to show JT the song before releasing it and that JT hasn't responded yet. However, she said, “If the phone call happens, I’ma answer it, and we’ll go from there.”
