"Amor Fati", the latest leak from Washed Out's upcoming Within and Without, touches on all the best tones from High Times and last year's Life of Leisure. But in a jump reminiscent of Wavves refiguring on King of the Beach, which sanded down his earlier work's signature rough edges into an instantly more living room-ready sound, "Amor Fati" feels like Washed Out has traded the cassette deck for the car radio. The song's made with the same tools, but the end result feels totally different. If the old Washed Out image was inner tubing downriver, the new vibe is early-’90s red convertible, Tom Cruise at the wheel, cruising through the Vegas desert. He just dumped a gorgeous woman with super curly hair, is jamming Washed Out and grinning about it. Within and Without comes out July 12th on Sub Pop.
