Miguel is definitely a weirdo in the landscape of modern radio R&B. His music seems like it’s simultaneously from the ’80s and the future, which is unique in a world where lots of R&B singers seem to feel pressured to pick one or the other. He probably could have been super-popular in the 2015 presented in Back to the Future II. Yesterday, he dropped Art Dealer Chic, Vol. 1, an unassumingly strong three-song set that finds him subtly stretching his comfort zone, ready to prove that while he might have made the jammy, down-to-earth “Sure Thing,” he’s definitely ready to face down the apocalypse. Miguel’s promised to deliver two more volumes of Art Dealer Chic this year, so there’s no need to despair at this project’s brevity.
