Chaz French Links With Saba For “What Ya Say”

The DC rapper gets his mind in tune with his heart.

At the end of this month Chaz French will release a follow-up to his 2014 debut tape Happy Belated, but first the DC rapper has decided to empty out his coffers in order to give listeners a better sense of who he is and where he intends to go. The first of these interim releases is “What Ya Say,” a soul-searching loosie featuring DC singer Saba and production from Kal Banx.

"This song is a moment of clarity and resolution from things I talked about in my first project, Happy Belated,” wrote in an email to The FADER, explaining that, “On that project I focused on my struggles, where now moving forward I want to concentrate more on getting the mind in tune with the heart to progress for the kids in my city.”

Accordingly, the "ya" in the title is a reference to his soul. "I'm trying to hear what my heart is saying a little better, which you may not have known at first listen," he wrote. "A lot of times people sell out for what other people think they should do rather than listen to their heart, but this soul of mine ain't for sale. On Happy Belated we walked through my struggles together, and now I want to walk with others through theirs."

Listen to "What Ya Say" below, and keep your eyes peeled for Chaz French's new project in the coming weeks.
