In the video for their collaborative track, "Be Great," hopeful R&B singer Kevin Ross and nimble rapper Chaz French call for excellence. The clip, debuting above, opens with the voices of victims of police violence, echoing the deadly obstacles that black Americans face while trying to live and achieve success. Ross and French, who are both Washington D.C. natives, walk through various neighborhoods, bringing a spirit of progressive optimism along with them. First Lady Michelle Obama's voice rings out from a television at one point. "When they go low, we go high," she says. The whole visual seems to reflect that sentiment, too.
"'Be Great' is more than a song— it's a mission statement," Ross told The FADER over email. "Chaz and I didn't want the song to come off 'preachy,' we just wanted to tell our truths in the hopes of connecting with people. Greatness is not a destination. It's a decision to shift your mindset."
