Back in 2018, English R&B singer Ella Mai scored one of the year's defining hits in "Boo'd Up," a cozy ballad inflected with the swing and percussions of West Coast rap that was followed by "Trip," another smash ("Boo'd Up" would go on to win a Best R&B Song Grammy). Today, the singer has announced her follow-up project "Leave You Alone," out May 6 on Mustard's label 10 Summers.
If "Boo'd Up" and "Trip" are your main reference points for Ella Mai's output, "Leave You Alone" offers another side for an artist who makes music about the difficulties of controlling her heart. It's a situationship that's driving the song, and the tension at its heart is Mai's desire for something deeper. "Every time you say you wanna chill, I end up naked / Could it be the pain and the pleasure that you're making?" Take a listen below.
