Sabo & Cassady, “Kuff Kumbia” MP3 & Que Bajo/Release Party Tonight (NYC)

Hey Nueva York, tonight is not only the latest installment of the contemporary Latin extravaganza that is Que Bajo, it is the release party for Sabo’s new release on venerable Bersa Discos. Concordantly, they’re offering this shimmy of a dancehall-sampling cumbia to get you in the mood, simmering with accordion shuffle and a little cross-the-island patois vibes. Que Bajo gets it in, and tonight they’ve got guest DJs Sabo and Disco Shawn (Bersa Discos) and residents Uproot Andy and Geko Jones, so crank your internal radiator and dress to sweat cause shit is getting tropically basslike tonight. Flyer/info after the jump.

NYC: Usain Bolt @ PUMA Store in Union Square

All you have do to get his autograph is beat him from the periodicals on the third floor to the Gaiam video rack on ground level. (Tip: Scatter some chocolate covered coffee beans at the escalator turn and he’ll go down.)

NYC: MoMA MiXX with Hercules and Love Affair and Mickalene Thomas

Giving a weird turn to the term “celebrity DJ,” MoMA’s new dance series, MoMA MiXX is combining real DJs (in this case, Andrew Butler, mastermind of Hercules and Love Affair, pictured above from FADER 53) with prominent artists, in this case, the stellar Mickalene Thomas, both playing sets of music that has been influential to them. In MoMA’s words: “MoMA MiXX pairs major artists with world-class musicians or DJs. At each dance party, both the DJ and the artist will spin a set of music that has been influential in their lives and work—a “MoMA mix” that will subsequently be available for download on MoMA.org.” For better or worse, this party has tickets available for $75. But it’s a benefit! With an open bar! And disco! This Saturday from eight to midnight.

NYC: (Red)Nights Hits Carnegie Hall

The last time we went to a benefit at Carnegie Hall (what?), they showed a video of a Barbara Walters interview with Hugh Jackman, who cried when talking about singing on the stage while his now deceased father watched him from the crowd wearing a tuxedo. That place is magic. Which is why (Red), who raises awareness about and money to fight AIDS in Africa, is staging a benefit concert there on October 4th, featuring Bono, Antony, Scarlett Johansson, Courtney Love and about a billion other famous people. Tickets are on sale now. Check the full flyer after the jump.

No Age, “You’re A Target” MP3 + Bear Movie from the ’80s

The bear is not from the ’80s, the film is (although who knows, bears could have awesome life spans). This Sunday in Los Angeles the Silent Movie dudes will screen The Bear, and stalwart LA boy wonders No Age will soundtrack it live for approximately 90 minutes. This should go well considering IMDB calls The Bear “The most majestic nature film of the century—pure escapism into the subtlety of life!” and The FADER calls No Age “A simple, subtle [band] regarding nature which gives us a true essence of the meaning and beauty of life.” It’s like a peanut butter sandwich upon which you add more peanut butter! In case you need to be emotionally prepared for this foray into the pure substance of nature, No Age is hitting you off with this new track “You’re a Target,” which both foreshadows the hunter/hunted dichotomy in this filmic masterwork, and provides some unexpectedly dreamy noise pop from the scraggy dudes of our time.

NYC: African Weekend With Radioclit’s Secousse Party and Rwandan Drummers

This Saturday, London’s Radioclit bring their Secousse party of international dance blasters to New York for the first time, along with performances by current FADER cover star Maluca, Janka Nabay and possibly a special guest who possibly has been on the cover of FADER and possibly knows Radioclit really well. Not Diplo. And after you recover on Sunday, make your way down south from Williamsburg to downtown Brooklyn to see Ingoma Nshya, a group of female drummers from Rwanda, pound it out to benefit Sweet Dreams, Rwanda’s first local ice cream shop. Fliers for both events are after the jump.

FUSE PRESENTS KANYE WEST: LIVE FROM CHICAGO THEATRE

Also, since you’re home on Saturday night, you might as well do some extra credit and polish up some apples since none of your teachers will be impressed that you watched TV all weekend.

NYC Film: Nina Simone – Great Performances

Andy Stroud’s rare-footage documentary, Nina Simone Great Performances: College Concerts and Interviews, opens at The Maysles Institute in New York City tonight. Stroud was Simone’s husband and manager and when we chose to feature her as one of our Icons in FADER 38, he provided great insight into her unique character and misunderstood personality. We also spoke with Stroud and Simone’s daughter—both interviews are republished here in full, heartbreaking glory. If legendary concert footage and timeworn interviews with the high priestess of soul are not enough to get you to travel up above 125th St. tonight, Maysles is also showing the first-ever documentary made about Johnny Cash, Johnny Cash: The Man, His World, His Music, from 1969. Split your brain like a dolphin and watch both documentaries at once.

Live: Dead Weather Play a Small Dark Room for the Privileged Few

Midday yesterday, Dead Weather aka Jack White and Alison Mosshart and two other less famous though still valuable folks, played a pop-up shop on Chrystie Street in Manhattan. More of Sunny’s photos and Natalia’s take on the wild scene the are after the jump.
